The First Cargo

The First Cargo
Work without explanation
Frank Minna takes four boys from St. Vincent’s Home for Boys to move sealed crates. He offers little explanation and treats the job as ordinary moving work.
The beginning of a team
Physical labor gives the boys a shared task and a first taste of money, beer, and life beyond the institution. Minna has begun recruiting them before they know what being his crew will mean.
A Company Name

A Company Name
Naming the work
Frank Minna gives the boys business cards for L&L Movers and explains that the word moving is the cover they should use. Their jobs range from legitimate furniture moves to suspicious deliveries.
A durable fiction
The boys learn that a business name can provide belonging as well as concealment. The small company becomes the framework for their relationship with Minna and with one another.
The Equipment Gift

The Equipment Gift
A troubling delivery
The boys transport a band’s instruments to a brownstone and encounter Matricardi and Rockaforte. The older men offer them the valuable equipment as a gift, but Frank Minna refuses it.
A lesson in limits
Frank Minna’s urgency and the clients’ casual talk of destroying the instruments reveal danger behind the apparent generosity. The boys receive money and a warning not to repeat the clients’ names.
From Movers to Drivers

From Movers to Drivers
A new storefront
Frank Minna reappears with plans for L&L Car Service. The boys leave school, train for driving licenses, renovate a storefront, and learn to operate surveillance equipment.
The hidden vocation
Minna reveals that the car service is a front for detective work. The boys’ loyalty becomes professional identity, even though their training still depends on his selective explanations.
A Legitimate Second Life

A Legitimate Second Life
Work without a hidden client
With Frank Minna and Tony Vermonte gone, Danny Fantl makes L&L a real car service and begins printing flyers. The Lincoln that carried Frank Minna’s dying body returns to ordinary use.
A modest inheritance
The surviving men retain their workplace and routines but lose their old center. Their legal business is an imperfect inheritance: less glamorous than the agency, but no longer dependent on criminal errands.
